History of Winchester, MA
The town of Winchester developed from a seventeenth century colonial village to the thriving community of today. The town, settled in the early 1600’s and known as the village of Waterfield, was originally an agricultural community with upland farms on the western side of town and apple orchards. The tiny village of 200 settlers evolved into a bustling mill town with the advent of the Middlesex Canal and the Boston and Lowell railroad. In the late 1800’s Winchester developed into an affluent suburban community as successful businessmen from Boston moved into town and built substantial homes.
